Top Ten Stylish Mamas: #9 Katie Holmes

While becoming a mother certainly reorganizes your priority list, with baby bottles trumping Burberry and lipstick taking a backseat to Lego, Bows and Buttons is a strong believer in balance. So while you may have to trade in your decadent Dior clutch for a practical diaper bag, there is no reason why that said diaper cannot be sleek and elegant while toting around baby's diapers. And we know, we know, dressing your wee tot feeds your sartorial desires way more then dressing yourself. But when all is said and done, and those maternity pants have been hung up for good (or at least until next time...) and baby is healthy and happy in a happening Burberry onesie, it's time to start thinking about you. And that Chanel purse. And how good that Chanel purse would look ON you. After all, these seemingly trivial but oh-so delectable sartorial delights make Mommy happy. And a happy Mommy makes a more patient, more forgiving, more calm mommy...and that 's something we are not about to question.

So in tribute to TGIF Motherhood everywhere, Bows and Buttons is bringing you a different Style Maverick Mommy (or SMM) to you every Friday.  Number #9 on our list of posh mothers is Mrs. Tom Cruise, mother of mini fashion-icon Suri Cruise--Mrs. Katie Holmes Cruise.

Katie presents a bit of a fashion conondrum indeed, as she certainly is stylistically schizo.  When she gets it right...she gets it right...but when whe gets it wrong...she gets it oh so wrong, in a sloppy hot-mess sort of way. We don't know if it stems from her Dawson's Creek days as innocent, tomboy Joey Potter or her image as the ultiamte girl next door, but Katie seems to unleash her inner styliephile when she sticks to a classic, tailored silhouette. And what says girl-next-door better than denim?  She did the Boyfriend Jean thing back in 2008, but now she favours highwaisted trouser jeans (very Mommy-esque) as well as skinnies.  Usually pairing them with a structured blazer with interesting details and a classic nude pump. She also rocks the denim shirt (with jeans...aesthetically difficult to oull off!) as well as the denim jacket (paired with a flirty balck & red dress and red pumps...very grown up Potter). Finally, Ms. Cruise peruses the epitome of classic--the trenchcoat, which she glams up with a pair of fabulous pumps or dresses down with a pair of black riding boots.  Suri would be proud.

Looking to infuse some Katie-Kool into your wardrobe? While you may not be able to strut around town with mini-fashion plate, Suri, you sure are able to look like this elegant mother.  Think the classics--denim, blazers, pumps, the trench--all in simple, neutral colours and in clean, unfussy styles. You can go for a tomboy approach--dressing down your denim with boots.  Or you can up the glam-factor with a great pair of simple nude pumps. Pair your denim with a tailored blazer or wrap it all up in a nude or black blazer.   Check out our picks below.
