Trick of the Tots: Layering (Girls)

As any mother knows, our little babies grow up way to fast which subsequently means they grow out of their clothing way to fast. This presents quite the conundrum, Dear Reader, as on the one hand we refuse to surrender our urge to dress our children in the season's hottest trends. While on the other hand, it may not always be so practical to purchase dozens of articles of clothing for our little fashion-savvy tike without going all Teresa Giudice bankrupt and such.  Thus, we are always searching for ways to extend our kids wardrobes. Enter our Trick of the Tots for the day: layering!

Turning first to the little ladies we will be looking specifically at three different layering elements: cardigans, accessories, and outerwear. First up, the ever cute and stylish cardi. Get your little gal pal to throw one over a flirty summer dress or over jeans and a T.  The cardi can add a punch of colour to an outift while adding an element of warmth.  Aesthetically pleasing and punctional...now there's a winning combo!  Take a peek at Jessica Alba's sweetheart Honor sporting a grey cable knit cardigan over a simple white T and purple skirt. Suri Cruise dons a watermelon-hue cardi over a simple white summer dress, while Harlow Richie Madden adds a pretty pink cardi to a T and shorts combo.  Take a cue from these mini fashionistas and you will never have to remind your toddler to put a sweater on because it's cold outside again!

Next up on our radar: accessories. Specifically the layering of scarves and tights that is. Scarves, with their versaility in the tying department can make your neck feel so cozy, add some colour around your face, as well as add depth to an outfit taking it from blah to brilliant in mere seconds. Check out Honor Marie's pop of colour against her mostly neutral out or Nahla Aubrey's cozy grey scarf. Then there are one of our strongest little-girl-dressing sartorial delights: tights. Solid or printed, simple or funky, microfiber or wool; these leggy delights add warmth and personality to any outfit. Victoria Beckham put daughter Harper Beckham in a pair of posh black Chloe tights for an elegant feel while Suri Criuse sports a mint pair to complement her cherry red jacket and teal skirt. Keeping warm never looked so good!

Our last suggestion for layering lays in outerwear. Not the knid of outerwear which keeps you toasty in blustery winds such as parkas, but instead the kind which with its lack of sleeves or bulk may add one third warmth, and two thirds style!  First up Salma Hayek's cutie pie, Valentina sports a Rachel Zoe inspired Fur gilet which is to die for.  Honor shows off in a short sleeve denim jacket layered over a multi-coloured top and leggings while Fashion Bee Suri looks like quite the sophisticate in a Trench. Hey, when you live in Hollywood your outerwear can skimp in the warmth department!

We've taken the grueling job of scouring the net to bring you a vast array of layer-able option from each of the three catagories above.  When trying this sartorial trick on your tot remember as Kourtney Kardashian so deftly has pointed out to layer bulky items on top of thinner ones. Also, contrast textures to add visual interest and to play with colour and fabric for interest. By throwing a cardi on, adding a scarf or pair of tights, and finishing with a gret outerwear option, your tots LBD can be worn all around town without anyone being the wiser!  Shop the looks below:

Mommy Monday: Layering Jewellery (Part II: Necklaces)

As busy mamas we often have .002 nanseconds to primp, polish and pick a killer outfit before tending to our wee ones. That is why we often rely on our go-to outfits. You know the ones...good ol' reliable: simple, comfy, and effortlessly stylish. Often they are supremely simple in form: a dark pair of skinny jeans, a white jersey tunic, and--if you are so inclined--a pair of shy high platform pumps--otherwise black leather French Sole ballet flats. We know these outfits look and feel great. But how to take said stylish ensemble to the next level of style. Enter accessories, or as stylist Rachel Zoe calls them "excess-ories". Fabulous baubles intended to really make a simple outfit pop. One trend B&B has been noticing lately is the layering of bracelets, necklaces & rings. The brilliance lies in the unique way each stylephile layers her jewels to express her own sense of sartorial self. The next three Mondays we will look at a different way to layer your accessories. This week we take a closer look at the to die for ways of layering your necklaces.

While scarves remain one of our all-time favourite ways to decorate our decolletage, sometimes an outfit just begs for a bit more glamour. Enter baubles for your neckline: necklaces. Whether against bare skin or draped over the fabric of your enselmble, necklaces can add a bit of elegance, earthiness, or edge to your look.  Similar to bracelets there are a myriad to choose from ranging from very delicate, gossimar pieces; to edgier, heavier pieces; to fabulous showstopping statament pieces. Silver has long been popular, but these days it seems all the celebs are making gold and rose gold on-trend.

When following the layering trends of necklaces there are some elements to consider. First of all consider the mixing of metals. Sticking to one metal and/or material is a safer way to ensure you get it right. The second is to choose necklaces of different lengths to emphaisze each indifividual piece. Thus, you might choose a couple of gold necklaces of different lengths.  If you are feeling edgier and want to experient, you can mix metals, materials and colours just make sure all the necklaces have a simlilar theme or contrast in an understandable way (i.e. and edgier, harder piece, with a more delicate one). Finally, consider the neckline of your ensemble. Layered necklaces should drape over your skin and simple fabric to properly showcase the piece. If the necklace hits the awkward spot where your neckline meets your skin or if your neckline has competing embellishment, the overall look is forced.  Ultimately you want to showcase the individual pieces in a way which grazes yuor skin and accentuates your outfit.

Turning now to our celebs rocking the layered necklace trend, B&B has noticed two major trends. The first is fabulously foolproof, the second fabulously fearless! The former involves the layering of several very thin, and delicate longer pieces of the same metal. Take a look at Emmy Rossum's beautiful silver combination which offsets her glittery dress.  Or check out Supermodel extrodinaire Kate Moss' layering of two fine gold necklaces. If you are really a novice at the whole layering trend, pick up a necklace which has the effect of layering but is really one piece a la Kim Kardashian.  Either way, you cannot go wrong with this trend.

The latter trend is for those who love to experiment with their look and want more of a haute or high fashion look.  It involves the layering of a standout necklace or bib necklace with another piece. We would recommend one truly "wow" piece with a more subdued one so as to not have competing pieces resulting in one hot mess. Check out Olivia Palermo's colourful throat hugger with a place layered piece and Sarah Jessica Parker's standout piece with a draped gold piece. Both are fashion forward and fabulous. And your two year olds Mardi Gras necklace? Throw it in there...after all it's fun and fearless fashion!

There are so many exquisite and trendy options out there right now, that really we could recommend almost anything and you could figure out a way to layer it with something else to make it pop.  Try mixing an ultra trendy look such as a piece from Nicole Richie's House of Harlow 1960 line, or Jennifer Zeuner's Horizontal Cross necklace with personal and nostalgic pieces of your own, such as a family locket. The mixing of different elements ensures you are elevated from fashion slave to fashion genius! Click to shop the look:

Top Ten Stylish Mamas: #7 Jessica Alba

While becoming a mother certainly reorganizes your priority list, with baby bottles trumping Burberry and lipstick taking a backseat to Lego, Bows and Buttons is a strong believer in balance. So while you may have to trade in your decadent Dior clutch for a practical diaper bag, there is no reason why that said diaper cannot be sleek and elegant while toting around baby's diapers. And we know, we know, dressing your wee tot feeds your sartorial desires way more then dressing yourself. But when all is said and done, and those maternity pants have been hung up for good (or at least until next time...) and baby is healthy and happy in a happening Burberry onesie, it's time to start thinking about you. And that Chanel purse. And how good that Chanel purse would look ON you. After all, these seemingly trivial but oh-so delectable sartorial delights make Mommy happy. And a happy Mommy makes a more patient, more forgiving, more calm mommy...and that 's something we are not about to question.

So in tribute to TGIF Motherhood everywhere, Bows and Buttons is bringing you a different Style Maverick Mommy (or SMM) to you every Friday. Number #8 on our list of Fashionable Femmes is the insanely gorgeous Jessica Alba. Mother or Honor and Haven Warren with hubby Cash, former #1 Sexiest Woman by Maxim Magazine, and starlett in such flicks as Sin City, Fantastic Four, Into the Blue and Good Luck Chuck. Lady has got it going on!

Jessica is on our list because although her beauty may mean she looks fantastic in everything she throws on, B&B has noticed that she also manages to strike the perfect balance between laid back and functional (she is often photographed with her hair tossed into a messy bun and held back with a headband, looser fitting clothing, and flats), as well as on-trend and effortlessly cool. The key to Ms. Alba's look seems to be not in the clothing itself, but to the layering of multiple pieces (i.e. sweaters, blazers, buttons ups) and the incorporation of key accessories (scarves, scarves, and more scarves!; as well as sunglasees such as her beloved Ray Ban Wayfares). When running after your mini-me, B&B suggests taking a cue from Ms. Alba's style book! Check out our fav looks below:

Looking to emulate Jessica's on-the-go Mommywear?  We suggest you start thinking scarves (specifically chunky scarves; leopard, solid earthy print)! Ms. Alba drapes a flowy scarf over most outfits, and while it may have served a different purpose over the last year (hiding that Baby bump), while not preggos it has served the Fashionable purpose of elevating a simple outfir from Blah to Brilliant.  What to drape that scarf over? We suggest mastering Jessica's skill of picking out the perfect pair of denim (skinnies, and most recently wide-legged), drapey sweaters, and stratetically placed accessories (think hoop earrings; a chunky bracelet, ring or necklace, a headband to keep flyaways at bay; and black wayfare aviator sunnies). All in all it adds up to some seriously sweet outfits. Take a look at our style suggestions below:
